Social Studies Curriculum
In fifth grade, the social studies content expectations are organized by historical era. They build upon students’ understanding of the other social studies disciplines from earlier grades, such as geography, civics, economics, and historical inquiry. Students are required to apply these concepts within the context of American history.
Students begin their units of study with American Indian peoples before the arrival of European explorers and conclude with the adoption of the Bill of Rights in 1791. The major units of study include the following:
· Natives Americans of the United States
· World Explorers
· Early Colonization
· Original 13 Colonies
· Revolutionary War
· The Constitution
· The Bill of Rights
Other Social Studies topics addressed with-in these units include map skills, economics, and government.
